Because many hair and scalp conditions can have underlying medical causes, trichologists often work alongside or refer patients to a dermatologist or physician when a condition requires broader medical evaluation.
Training Path
Because trichology isn't a standardized medical specialty in the same way as fields like dermatology or cardiology, training paths can vary. Some trichologists are qualified dermatologists who have pursued additional specific training and certification in trichology, while others come from cosmetology or allied health backgrounds with focused trichology certification, without a full medical degree.
